Writers represents a confluence
of academics, environmental and community leaders, political economists,
and public intellectuals. Gallatin works with people who do not believe
that the many ills affecting land and society in the American West
will be cured through the "normal" channels of policy directives
from Washington or heroic leadership from afar.
The West's healing will come through creating
its own institutions and decentralized actions. But before this
can be accomplished, the region must confront its own history and
learn the sources of its social and environmental problems. Fundamentally,
this is a cultural problem. Gallatin Writers' goal is to help break
the West's stalemate by exploring innovative policies for cultural
transformation.
